How do I know if my air ducts need cleaning?

Look for heavy buildup, not a light film. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s guide to air duct cleaning suggests considering a cleaning when:

• The ducts are clogged with a lot of dust and debris, or dust actually blows out of the supply vents (the vents that blow air into the rooms).
• There are signs of rodents or insects in the ducts.
• There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard metal ducts or other parts of the system.

Some dust on the return grilles, the large vents that pull air back to the system, is normal. You can vacuum those yourself. If you are not sure what you are seeing, we will look first and tell you honestly whether a cleaning is worth it.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

There is no fixed schedule. The EPA recommends cleaning ducts when they need it rather than on a routine timetable. Good times to have them checked include:

• After a remodel or other project that made a lot of dust.
• When you move into a home and don’t know when the ducts were last cleaned.
• When the filter turns gray much faster than it used to.
• When you notice any of the signs above.

Between cleanings, changing the filter every 1 to 3 months does more than anything else to keep dust out of the ducts.

What happens during a Rotobrush duct cleaning?

1. A look at your system. The technician checks the ducts and counts the vents, so you know the price before any work begins.
2. Scrubbing and vacuuming together. The Rotobrush system runs a spinning brush through each duct while a strong vacuum pulls the loosened dust out. It scrubs and vacuums every duct at the same time.
3. What we found. If we see a crushed, torn or disconnected duct, or a filter that needs changing, we point it out and explain your options. Nothing extra is done without your OK.

What will duct cleaning change, and what won’t it?

Cleaning ducts that are clogged with dust and debris removes that buildup and can improve airflow, so the system doesn’t have to push as hard to heat or cool your rooms. It is not a cure for health problems, and we won’t tell you it is.

Cleaning also can’t fix ducts that are leaking, crushed or falling apart. Leaky ducts can pull dust in from the attic or crawl space, which is often why a home gets dusty again quickly. If that is the real problem, duct repair or replacement is the better fix, and we will tell you so.
