When should I replace my AC instead of repairing it?
Replace it when the cost and hassle of keeping it running outweigh what you get back. These signs point toward replacement:
- Age. The system is about 15 years or older. Lifespan depends on the type of system and how well it was maintained, so we are happy to look at yours if you are unsure.
- A major repair on an old system. A failed compressor or coil on an aging AC is often not worth fixing.
- Frequent repairs. Every system needs a repair now and then, but several calls a year is a sign it is wearing out.
- Rising energy bills. Older systems work harder to keep up and use more energy doing it.
- Rooms that never get comfortable. If the system runs as designed but still can’t cool your home, it may be the wrong size or type.
- A leak that keeps coming back. Recharging refrigerant again and again doesn’t fix the cause.
| Situation | Usually repair | Usually replace |
|---|---|---|
| Age of system | Under about 10 to 12 years | About 15 years or older |
| Type of problem | One failed part, like a capacitor or fan motor | Compressor or coil failure on an older system |
| Repair history | First problem in years | Several repairs in the last year or two |
| Comfort | Cooled well until the part failed | Never kept the whole home comfortable |
If a repair makes more sense, we’ll say so. See AC repair for what a repair visit includes.
What happens during an AC replacement?
- Home evaluation. A technician looks at your current system, your home and how you use it, so the new system is the right size for your cooling needs.
- Ductwork check. Older ducts may not carry cool air well to every room. If changes are needed, we explain them and make them before the new system goes in. See duct repair and replacement.
- Options and a written quote. You get a few system options, explained in plain language, with a clear written quote. The estimate is free.
- Permits and HERS testing. We pull the permit and arrange HERS testing (an independent check that the new system was installed properly), so you don’t have to.
- Installation. We remove the old equipment and install the new system.
- Testing and walkthrough. We run the system, check that it is cooling properly and show you how to use the thermostat.
What type of AC should replace mine?
Most homes choose between three kinds of systems. A central air conditioner cools the whole home through your existing ducts. A heat pump also uses ducts, but it can both cool and heat, so it may replace your AC and furnace with one system. A ductless mini-split cools room by room without ducts, which suits additions, converted garages and homes without ductwork.
Newer systems use a newer type of refrigerant, called A2L, while many existing systems use R-410A. Your technician will explain what that means for your home. If some rooms are always warmer than others, ask about zoning when you replace your system.
The cheapest unit is tempting, but the best value is usually the most efficient, best-made option that fits your budget. We’ll explain the trade-offs honestly and never push you toward more than you need.
Should I replace my AC with a heat pump?
Often, yes, especially if your furnace is also getting old. A heat pump looks and cools just like a central air conditioner, but it can run in reverse to heat your home in winter. Our mild Bay Area climate suits heat pumps well, and they usually connect to your existing ducts.
| Feature | Central air conditioner | Heat pump |
|---|---|---|
| Cools in summer | Yes | Yes |
| Heats in winter | No, you still need a furnace | Yes, with electricity instead of gas |
| Outdoor unit | One condenser | One outdoor unit that looks almost the same |
| Uses your existing ducts | Yes | Usually, yes |
| Good fit when | Your furnace is fairly new and only the AC needs replacing | Your furnace and AC are both aging, or your city requires a heat pump |
Some cities now require a heat pump when an AC is replaced. As of November 2026:
- Mountain View: the city’s reach code page includes AC-to-heat-pump replacement requirements for existing single-family homes, for permits submitted on or after January 1, 2026. See our Mountain View page.
- Menlo Park: the city’s heat pump requirements page says a heat pump is required when an existing AC condenser is replaced, with a cost hardship exception. See our Menlo Park page.
A working AC never has to be replaced because of these rules; they apply when you replace it. We check your city’s current rules on every estimate. Heat pumps may also qualify for local rebates. You may qualify; call us and we’ll check what applies to your home.
We selected this company to replace our old AC system. … They were honest, very pleasant to work with and they did not try to upsell us anything we don’t actually need.

AC replacement questions
How much does a new AC cost?
It depends on the size of your home, the type of system and the condition of your ducts. We give free estimates with a clear written quote, so you know the price before you decide.
How long does an air conditioner last?
It varies by type of system and how well it was maintained. Many last 15 years or more. Yearly tune-ups help a system reach the long end of its life.
Who handles the permit and inspections?
We do. We take care of the permit and HERS testing for you, so there is nothing for you to file or schedule.
Can a heat pump replace my AC?
Yes. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats in winter, so it can replace your AC, and your furnace too. In Mountain View and Menlo Park, a heat pump is generally required when you replace an AC.
Should I replace my furnace at the same time?
Sometimes it makes sense, especially if both are old or if a heat pump would replace them both. We’ll look at both systems and give you options.
Can I keep my existing ducts?
Often, yes. We check the ducts during the estimate and tell you if any repairs or changes would help the new system work well.
