When is a ductless mini-split the best choice?
A mini-split makes the most sense when adding or fixing ducts would be hard, costly or not possible. Common examples:
- Homes without ducts. Many older Bay Area homes were built with wall heaters or baseboard heat and no ductwork.
- Additions and conversions. A new bedroom, garage conversion or ADU often can’t be reached by the existing ducts.
- Problem rooms. A bonus room, sunroom or upstairs bedroom that is always too hot or too cold.
- Different comfort needs. A home office, nursery or guest room that needs its own setting.
Do I need a single-zone or multi-zone mini-split?
It depends on how many rooms you want to heat and cool. A single-zone mini-split pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor unit, which is the simplest choice for one room, an addition or an ADU. A multi-zone mini-split connects one outdoor unit to two or more indoor units, so several rooms, or a whole home without ducts, each get their own temperature.

How does a ductless mini-split work?
A mini-split has two main parts: an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. A small set of refrigerant lines and a wire run through a small hole in the wall to connect them. Like any heat pump, it moves heat. In winter it brings heat in from outdoors, and in summer it moves heat out. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so you can heat or cool only the rooms you are using.
Should I choose a mini-split or a central heat pump?
Both are heat pumps. The main difference is how the air gets to your rooms.
| Ductless mini-split | Central heat pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Ducts | Not needed | Uses your existing ducts |
| Temperature control | Each indoor unit set on its own | Usually one thermostat for the home, unless you add zoning |
| What you see indoors | An indoor unit on the wall or ceiling of each room | Only vents and a thermostat |
| Best for | Rooms or homes without ducts, additions, ADUs | Whole homes with ducts in fair shape |
Some homes use both: a central heat pump for the main house and a mini-split for an addition. We’ll help you choose what fits your home.
What happens during a mini-split installation?
- Free in-home estimate. We look at the rooms you want to heat and cool, where the indoor and outdoor units can go, and your electrical service.
- A clear written quote. You get a written quote with the equipment, the number of indoor units and the work included.
- Permits. We pull the permits and handle any required HERS testing (a third-party check of the new system) for you.
- Installation. We mount the indoor and outdoor units, run the refrigerant lines, wiring and condensate drain, and keep the line set neat.
- Testing and walkthrough. We run each unit in heating and cooling and show you how to use the remote or app.
How do I keep a mini-split running well?
Clean filters and regular service keep a mini-split working well. Each indoor unit has washable filters. Check them every 1 to 3 months and rinse them when they look dusty. Keep about 2 feet clear around the outdoor unit. A yearly professional cleaning takes care of the coils, drain lines and parts you can’t reach. See mini-split maintenance for what’s included.
Do you repair mini-splits?
Yes. Common signs a mini-split needs repair are weak heating or cooling, water dripping from an indoor unit, ice on the lines, new noises or a blinking error light. The diagnostic visit is $89, and it is waived when you approve the repair. Comfort Club members pay $49 and get 15% off repairs.
I highly recommend Upgrade Home Services. Victor is fair, knowledgable, affordable, and provides very professional customer support.
