What is a multi-zone mini-split?
A multi-zone mini-split is one outdoor unit connected to two or more indoor units. Each indoor unit serves one zone, such as a bedroom, the living room or an office, and has its own remote, app or wall control. Like every mini-split, it is a heat pump, so it heats in winter and cools in summer without ducts. Depending on the model, one Mitsubishi multi-zone outdoor unit can connect from 2 up to 8 indoor units.
When is a multi-zone system the right choice?
Choose a multi-zone mini-split when several rooms need heating and cooling and ducts aren’t an option. Common examples:
- Homes without ducts. Many older Bay Area homes have wall heaters or baseboard heat and no ductwork. A multi-zone system can heat and cool the whole home.
- Replacing wall heaters. Rooms that each had their own wall heater can each get an indoor unit, adding cooling at the same time.
- Different comfort in every room. Keep bedrooms cool at night and the living room warm, and turn off rooms you aren’t using.
- Less equipment outside. One outdoor unit instead of several, which helps on narrow side yards and small lots.
Multi-zone or several single-zone systems?
Both can heat and cool a whole home. The right choice depends on how many rooms you have, where the outdoor equipment can go and how you use each room.
| One multi-zone system | Several single-zone systems | |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor units | One for the whole group of rooms | One per room |
| Space outside | Less equipment on the side of the house | More outdoor units to place |
| If an outdoor unit needs service | Every room on it is affected | Only one room is affected |
| Efficiency | Very efficient when several rooms run at once | Each system is matched to its room |
| Best for | Whole homes and groups of rooms near each other | Rooms far apart, or one or two rooms |

What indoor units can a multi-zone system use?
Each zone can use the indoor unit style that fits the room best, and you can mix styles on one system:
- Wall-mounted. The most common choice for bedrooms and living rooms.
- Floor-mounted. Sits low on the wall, good under windows or in rooms with sloped ceilings.
- Ceiling cassette. Fits into the ceiling, so only a flat grille shows.
- Ducted (concealed). Hides in an attic, crawl space or closet and uses short ducts to serve one or two nearby rooms.
Not every indoor unit works with every outdoor unit. As a Diamond Contractor, we design the system with combinations Mitsubishi approves.
Why choose a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor?
A multi-zone system has to be designed and sized room by room, and installed with care at every line set. Upgrade Home Services is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor. Diamond Contractors complete Mitsubishi Electric’s highest level of product training. As of November 2026, Mitsubishi Electric says a system installed by a Diamond Contractor in a single-family home, and registered within 90 days of installation, is eligible for a 12-year parts and 12-year compressor limited warranty while the original owner lives in the home. Mitsubishi lists its standard warranty as 5 years on parts and 7 years on the compressor. Source: Mitsubishi Electric, product registration. We register your system with Mitsubishi for you, so it is eligible for the longer warranty.

We selected this company to replace our old AC system. … They were honest, very pleasant to work with and they did not try to upsell us anything we don’t actually need.

Multi-zone mini-split questions
How many rooms can one multi-zone system serve?
Depending on the model, one Mitsubishi multi-zone outdoor unit can connect from 2 up to 8 indoor units. Larger homes sometimes use two outdoor units. We size it at the free estimate.
Can each room be a different temperature?
Yes. Each indoor unit has its own control, so every zone can be set to its own temperature or turned off. On most systems, all zones run in the same mode, heating or cooling, at the same time.
Can a multi-zone mini-split replace my wall heaters?
Often, yes. Each room with a wall heater can get its own indoor unit, so you get heating and cooling in every room. We’ll look at your home and recommend the layout.
Can I add a zone later?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the outdoor unit has open connections and enough capacity. If you plan to add rooms, tell us at the estimate so we can plan for it.
