When should I replace my thermostat?
Replace it when it stops controlling your system reliably, or when you want features it does not have. These are the most common reasons we hear:
- The screen is blank, even with fresh batteries.
- The temperature it shows does not match how the room feels.
- The system turns on and off every few minutes (short cycling).
- It is an old manual or mercury thermostat (one with a small glass tube inside).
- You want a schedule, or control from your phone.
An old mercury thermostat should not go in the household trash. It needs to go to a hazardous waste drop-off, and we can point you to one near you.
Which type of thermostat is right for me?
Pick the simplest thermostat that does what you want. Here is how the three main types compare.
| Type | What it does | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | You set the temperature by hand | You want something simple and rarely change the setting |
| Programmable | Follows a daily or weekly schedule you set | Your days follow a routine and you want the system to adjust on its own |
| Smart (Wi-Fi) | Connects to your home Wi-Fi, so you can adjust it from your phone, and can learn your habits | You want phone control, reminders and energy reports |
Smart thermostats such as Google Nest and ecobee are popular choices. We will help you pick one that fits your system and how you use your home.
Will a new thermostat work with my system?
Most will, but compatibility matters more than brand. We check these before we install:
- The C-wire. Many smart thermostats need a common wire (C-wire), which gives them steady power. Older homes often do not have one. We can add one or use an adapter.
- Heat pumps. A heat pump needs a thermostat made for heat pumps, so it controls the reversing valve and backup heat correctly.
- Two-stage systems. A two-stage furnace or AC (one that runs on low or high) needs a thermostat that supports both stages.
- Mini-splits. Ductless mini-splits often use their own remote or wall controls, and many standard thermostats will not work with them.
Can a new thermostat fix my heating or cooling problem?
Only if the thermostat is the problem. A thermostat tells your system when to run; it cannot fix a furnace, AC or heat pump that is failing. If your system is not heating or cooling, start with a diagnostic visit: $89, waived when you approve the repair. For Comfort Club members the diagnostic is $49. A technician finds the real cause, and if it turns out to be the thermostat, we will tell you.
He was quickly able to figure out the problem and identify the fix.

Can one thermostat control different rooms?
Not on its own. One thermostat controls one zone. If some rooms are always too hot or too cold, a zoning system uses a thermostat in each zone and dampers in the ducts, so each area can be set to its own temperature.
What happens during a thermostat installation?
- Check the system. A technician looks at your furnace, AC or heat pump and the existing wiring.
- Choose the thermostat. We confirm the model works with your system, or help you pick one.
- Remove the old thermostat. We label the wires and take it down.
- Wire and mount the new one. We add a C-wire if it needs one, and patch small gaps behind the new base.
- Set it up. We set the system type, schedule and Wi-Fi if it is a smart model.
- Test. We run heating and cooling from the new thermostat and show you how to use it.
Key takeaway: Choose a thermostat that matches your system’s wiring and equipment, not just the features you want. If your system is not heating or cooling, book a diagnostic first, because a new thermostat cannot fix a failing system.
Where should my thermostat go?
Put it on an inside wall in a room you use often, away from direct sun, supply vents, doors to the outside, and heat sources like lamps or the kitchen stove. These can trick it into reading the wrong temperature, so the system runs too much or too little.

Thermostat installation questions
How much does thermostat installation cost?
It depends on the thermostat and your wiring, such as whether a C-wire needs to be added. Call us at (408) 649-3198 for a quote.
Can I install a smart thermostat if I don’t have a C-wire?
Often, yes. We can run a new wire or use an adapter, depending on your system.
Do you install thermostats for heat pumps?
Yes. We install thermostats made for heat pumps, so the system heats, cools and uses backup heat correctly.
Will a smart thermostat work with my mini-split?
Many will not, because mini-splits often use their own controls. We can tell you which control options work with your model.
What are your hours?
