What is a single-zone mini-split?

A single-zone mini-split is one outdoor unit connected to one indoor unit. The two are joined by a small set of refrigerant lines, a wire and a drain line that run through a hole about 3 inches wide in the wall. Like every mini-split, it is a heat pump, so the same system heats in winter and cools in summer. There are no ducts, and the indoor unit has its own remote or app, so the room gets exactly the temperature you choose.

When is a single-zone system the right choice?

Choose a single-zone mini-split when one space needs its own heating and cooling. Common examples in Bay Area homes:

  • Garage conversions and ADUs. These spaces usually can’t be reached by the home’s ducts.
  • Additions. A new bedroom or family room that the existing furnace or AC wasn’t sized for.
  • The one problem room. An upstairs bedroom, sunroom or bonus room that is always too hot in summer or too cold in winter.
  • A home office or nursery. A room you want at a different temperature from the rest of the house.
  • A small home or condo. An open living area can often be covered by one well-placed indoor unit.

Single-zone or multi-zone: which do I need?

If you are heating and cooling one space, single-zone is usually the simplest and most efficient option. If you want several rooms on their own controls, a multi-zone mini-split connects them to one outdoor unit.

Some homes use several single-zone systems instead of one multi-zone system, so each room runs on its own. We’ll explain the trade-offs for your home at the free estimate.

What kind of indoor unit can I choose?

Most single-zone systems use a wall-mounted indoor unit, but there are other styles for different rooms:

  • Wall-mounted. The most common choice. It mounts high on a wall and works in most rooms.
  • Floor-mounted. Sits low on the wall, a good fit under a window or in rooms with sloped ceilings.
  • Ceiling cassette. Fits into the ceiling, so only a flat grille shows.
  • Ducted (concealed). Hides in an attic, crawl space or closet and uses a few short ducts to reach one area.

Recently, Victor was in to fix our AC unit and he did an amazing job. He was quickly able to figure out the problem and identify the fix.

Single-zone mini-split questions

How big a room can one single-zone mini-split cover?

It depends on the room’s size, insulation, windows and sun. One indoor unit can often cover a bedroom, office or open living area. We size the system at the free estimate so it isn’t too big or too small.

Can I add more rooms later?

Yes. You can add another single-zone system for the new room. If you expect to add several rooms, ask us whether a multi-zone system makes more sense.

Does a single-zone mini-split need its own electrical circuit?

Yes. The outdoor unit needs its own circuit. We check your electrical panel at the estimate and include any wiring the system needs in your quote.

Is a mini-split quiet?

Yes. The compressor and fan are outside, so indoor units run quietly, and inverter models speed up and slow down gently instead of turning on and off.

How much does a single-zone mini-split cost?

It depends on the equipment, the indoor unit style and your home. We give free estimates with a clear written quote.
